Cough and Cold Syrup for the Littles

Is this the look you’re given when you try to give your child some medicine? When I was little my mom gave me the grape and cherry flavored medicine. I have always associated those flavors with medicine and can taste them a mile away. No cherry Koolaid for me!

Unfortunately not only do these medicines taste bad, but they’re equally bad for you. Suppressing symptoms only hinders the body from getting rid of the sickness. This herbal extract naturally supports the body in its healing process.
I usually make my herbal extracts in alcohol, but I use glycerin for our son since it’s sweet and more appropriate for children.

There are a dozen and one recipes for elderberry syrup out there. While this is a great remedy, I wanted to do something different.  For this cough and cold syrup I’ve used the following ingredients:

Echinacea– Powerful antibiotic that’s also good for strep throat.
Licorice– Good for sore throats, coughs and colds. Also anti-inflammatory.
Rose hips Very high in vitamin C and vitamin C complex.

Echinacea should not be taken long term, so only use this syrup for 2 consecutive weeks at the most. It isn’t as effective if it’s taken daily. Reach for this when you are sick, feel a bug coming on, or have been exposed to others who are sick and want some immunity.
Licorice should be used with caution for anyone with a heart condition. If you’re concerned about it, simply omit it and increase the echinacea and rose hips by 1 Tbsp each.

Make It!

  • 2/3 cup glycerin (food grade)
  • 1/2 cup purified water
  • 2 Tbsp each Rose hips, Echinacea and Licorice (buy here)
  1. Combine all ingredients in a pot and simmer with lid on over low heat for 2 hours. I used a large pot, but I recommend a small one. Allow to cool slightly.
  2. Strain herbs out using a cheesecloth, plastic or metal strainer. Be sure the mixture isn’t too hot or you’ll burn yourself!
  3. Store in a dark colored bottle.
  4. Children take 1/2 tsp 3-5x a day, Adults take 2 tsp 3-5x a day until the condition has cleared significantly (about two days). Reduce dosage after the first day or two.

* Remains effective for 3 years when stored in a cool, dry place.
